The Cartagena refinery is used for oil refining to obtain fuels, gases and industrial products for both domestic and international consumption. Cartagena currently exports approximately 20% to 25% of its production to the international oil market.
The current refinery offers the following products:
Fuels
Regular Gasoline
Designed for consumption in internal combustion automotive vehicles. In Colombia it is commercially known as regular gasoline; however, it is given other names such as Regular Gasoline or Unleaded 81. It is currently dispatched to wholesale distributors in the northern part of the country.
Extra gasoline
Designed for consumption in internal combustion motor vehicles and for most engines at any altitude. In Colombia it is known commercially as Extra Gasoline. Other names given to this product are Premium Gasoline or Unleaded 87. It is currently dispatched to wholesale distributors in the north of the country.
Diesel or ACPM
Designed for use in Diesel engines, commonly used in trucks and buses, power generation plants and marine vessels (for marine vessels it is known as Marine Diesel). In the international market it is known as No. 2. It is currently dispatched to wholesale distributors in the north of the country, and surpluses are exported to the Gulf Coast and the Caribbean.
Jet A-1
Designed to be used as fuel for aircraft with propulsion or jet turbines. It is additionally known as Turbofuel or jet fuel. Currently it is dispatched to wholesale distributors in the north of the country and the surplus is sold in the international market. It is the product with the highest added value produced by the refinery.
Combustoleo o Fuel Oil
It is a heavy fuel for furnaces, dryers and boilers. It can also be used for heaters (heating units) and in power generation plants. It is dispatched under the modalities of delivery by tanker ship.
Virgin Naphtha and High Octane Naphtha
The refinery also produces surplus virgin naphtha for export and high octane naphtha.
Industrial
Arotate
Residual product, it is used to make carbon black used in the tire industry. It can also be used as part of the preparation of fuel oil. It is marketed nationally.
Sulfur
Product used for the vulcanization of rubber, manufacture of some types of steel and preparation of sulfuric acid. It is shipped in bulk liquid form in tank trucks. It is marketed in the northern part of the country.
Coke
Solid fuel with a high calorific value that is used in the cement and steel industries, and in some cases as a raw material for the manufacture of electrodes in the aluminum industry. Currently, there is a commercialization contract for the international market.
Propylene
It is marketed directly to Esenttia S.A. to produce polypropylene with which different plastic accessories are manufactured. It is sold in the northern part of the country.
Industrial and domestic gases
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)
It is used especially as domestic fuel. It can also be used as a fuel in furnaces, dryers, and boilers. The product is delivered in a liquid state to LPG storage companies.
